Classification of cycling wear and history of its development.

Today it is impossible to imagine professional and amateur cycling without special sportswear.

Cycling outfit is classified into several groups:

  • upper part, or cycle jersey (cycle shirt)
  • bottom part - cycle shorts, or cycling bibs
  • bike helmet
  • cycling gloves
  • cycling shoes
  • cycling socks (a real road racer always wears white socks; other variations are used moderately)
  • cycling cap (separate fetish, today is rarely used, but is an integral part of the cycling culture), has a round shape, and a short peak.
  • windstopper, or light jackets to protect the rider’s body from wind blowing or in windy weather.
  • raincoats. They look like windstoppers, but are made from other materials.

Additional items of clothing, quite common, but used less frequently:

  • sleeves (riders wear them in cool or windy weather)
  • the same for legs (cyclists call them leg sleeves because of the similarity of use with arm sleeves)
  • padded bike jackets (for colder weather conditions), have multi-layer high-tech fabrics

Textile, clothing and footwear industry for cycling and bike culture has evolved because such a vehicle like a bicycle has become massively widespread. A milestone event was the multi-day race, founded in the early 20th century in France, namely in 1903. It was then that the Tour de France bicycle race was organized, which is also called the Tour. It was an advertising project of the newspaper L `Auto, and the goal of the race was to compete with other races of that time.

It is believed that it was in those days that the bike clothing got its first forms and outlines. As a rule, natural materials were used, the first t-shirts were made of wool, so athletes, apart from physical exertion, experienced some discomfort from wearing sportswear. The seams on the first men’s bicycle shirts were of poor quality, the fabrics quickly absorbed moisture and rubbed the athletes' body. In the 40s of the 20th century, the Italian tailor Armando Castelli tried to create silk cycling shirts. Castelli has made many functional enhancements, thanks to which riders could enjoy certain benefits. Silk was much lighter than wool, and as an added advantage, various inks were very easily applied to silk. Inks played an important role in promoting cycling, as big business saw a valuable idea in turning riders into advertising carriers.

With the development of the chemical industry, the industry of the bicycle apparel began to develop rapidly. Chemists have changed the world of cycling and cycling equipment with their inventions of polyester, nylon, and spandex. Then, in the 70's, combining polyester with elastin, Eleuthere Irenee du Pont invented a lycra.

Cyclists have gradually ceased to use wool and silk, preferring modern fabrics. New types of fabrics better absorbed and repelled moisture, protected from wind and rain, tightly wrapped the body of riders, adding aerodynamic properties (advantages).

New accessories and cycling apparel elements (clips, fasteners), reflective elements and much more have appeared on the market. Perhaps the most important factor in the production of road cycling gear is the application of drawings and images, because athletes ride in extreme weather conditions. The structure of the drawing and the color must remain unchanged. They are resistant to moisture, UV rays, salt and wind. One of the methods we use in sewing men’s cycling jersey is the sublimation method. This is a thermo- chemical method of application drawings on a fabric that satisfies the above-mentioned conditions for custom cycling jersey. It is also fast, reliable, and allows you to apply any image and color to future cool cycling jerseys. After application on the road bike jersey, the pattern does not fade, can be repeatedly washed in washing machines at any temperature using detergents. After heat treatment, the fabric and bike jerseys (this is how a pattern is created) do not lose their properties (elasticity, softness, etc.), because the computer controls the system, and the human factor is excluded.
